Join the Council

Want to get involved? The Amesbury Cultural Council is always looking for new members who are interested in supporting our local arts community. We are a volunteer municipal board, which means our operating procedures are closely linked to the City of Amesbury, as well as the Massachusetts Cultural Council.

Our primary responsibility is to distribute grant money provided by the state of Massachusetts each year. We also manage the annual Amesbury Open Studio Tour, support the Amesbury Poet Laureate, curate the Art@City Hall program, and work to facilitate and lead other cultural initiatives throughout the City and region.

  • Members are typically appointed for 3 year terms.

  • Per Massachusetts Cultural Council requirements, no member can serve for more than 6 years consecutively.

  • We typically meet once per month, on the 1st Tuesday of the month, from 6:30 to 8:00pm to discuss any pending projects and new initiatives.

  • Between meetings, members typically do 5+ hours a month of additional volunteer work, depending on what we have going on.

  • Depending on your level of interest and available time, there are also officer positions available (slightly more time commitment).

  • During busy times (usually leading up to events) responsibilities may increase and we occasionally schedule supplemental meetings.

  • Members usually help out depending on their skills and areas of interest. However, everyone pitches in for the annual Amesbury Open Studios and the grant process.

  • Attend regular meetings (not necessarily each one)

  • Lend a hand with ACC events + projects, whether onsite or behind-the-scenes

  • Cannot vote during meetings

  • Let us know how / how much you want to help!

How Do I Join?

  1. First, we encourage all prospective members to attend 2 to 3 consecutive meetings. This is the best way to get a sense for what we do before making a longer-term commitment to the Council.

  2. The next step is to fill out an application (online or PDF) and submit it to the Mayor's office. Someone from the Mayor's office will contact you to set up an interview.

  3. You will meet with the ACC Chair and the Mayor to discuss your interest in the Council and review your qualifications. If your appointment is approved, you will then attend a City Council meeting to officially complete the process.

  4. The whole process can take anywhere from a couple weeks to several months. However, you can begin attending ACC meetings as a member of the public right away (no voting ability).

  5. Once you are officially a member, you have full voting right and are expected to attend monthly meetings.

  6. You will also be added to the Massachusetts Cultural Council database and will be required to do several quick training modules online. These sessions are very helpful in learning about the granting process.
